The killjoys- Dont you know lyrics

Oh I'm looking for something new
I wish my friends could be like you
Oh taking it day by day
Just let you see you're in my way

Got to move to somewhere else
Just to get away from you
I've got to move to some place new
Just to get away from you

Woah

I've seen you looking at my face
I've seen you falling in disgrace
?
Don't you know

I've seen you looking at my face
I've seen you falling in disgrace
Don't you know
?

? Go ? see
Always standing in front of me
Wouldn't mind to find out why
Always looking me in the eye

And I've got to move to somewhere else
Just to get away from you
I've got to move to someplace new
Just to get away from you

I've seen you looking at my face
I've seen you falling in disgrace
?
Don't you know (Oh don't you know) know?

I've seen you looking at my face
I've seen you falling in disgrace
?
Don't you know (Oh don't you know) know?

The one you're looking at's not me
Oh don't you know

I've seen you looking at my face
(I've seen you falling in disgrace...?)
Don't you know
I've seen you looking at my face
(I've seen you falling in disgrace...?)
Don't you know
I've seen you looking at my face
(I've seen you falling in disgrace...?)
Don't you know
I've seen you looking at my face
(I've seen you falling in disgrace...?)
Don't you know
Don't you know
Don't you know

Song
Don’t you know?

Genre
Indie

Target Audience
14-20 year olds

Outline of Narrative
As the initial part of the song is solely instrumental we will construct the opening scene of the video to align with this, we will begin by establishing the main male character where we will employ a wide range of varying close up shots to present him to the audience of which we will not completely reveal his identity to the viewer. The boy will receive a phone call from his girlfriend where we will use a close up shot of the phone and will see “Claire” phoning of which his response will be to cut of the call and not answer. From this the audience are getting a hint that the boy is in a troubled relationship and so are able to detect that as the video continues they will learn the reasons behind the reason for their break up. As the lyrics begin the audience are shown a flashback of the boy sat in his bedroom writing a letter to the girl that he is breaking up which hopefully the audience will realise. An over the shoulder shot will be used to show him writing the letter where we will then have a close up of what he is writing which will be the lyrics to the song “I’m looking for something new” as the idea is that what the lyrics say is what the boy wants to say to his girlfriend. Then as the lyrics “I’m taking it day by day” and “just let you see” arise the boy puts down his pen, leans back and sinks into his chair to show that he is thinking and sings the two lines. The flashback continues as when the boy is about to sing the line “ your in my way” the audience are shown an incident that occurred between the couple where the girl blocks a door by standing in front of it in order to prevent the boy from getting past when he is trying to get away from her.
The flashback ends and we the see the boy continuing to walk down the pathway that we saw him walking down before the flashback as he mimes the words “got to move to somewhere else, just got to get away from you, I’ve got to move to some place new, just to get away from you” to the camera. At this point we will use a medium long shot in order to portray the male characters persona as being a normal stereotypical teenage boy which through the mise en scene the audience will be able to recognise through his clothing. As the song breaks into “woahhhhhhhhh” another flashback occurs which we will use Adobe premiere to create a dissolving effect, the flashback will consist of the girl with the leading role to accidentally fall over and her boyfriend the starring boy to help her up and laugh it off which will be done for the first time that the chorus is played via a medium long shot to ensure that the audience can fully witness the events that are occurring. From this we want to convey the breakdown of the relationship to the audience as in later scenes we see a dramatic contrast in terms of how their relationship functions i.e. it is starting off innocently “I’ve seen you falling in disgrace” we have taken a literal meaning in regards to the first time this line of the chorus is played however as the song progresses we will interpret it metaphorically as we want to highlight the break down in their relationship.
(Unknown 1)

We then go back to the flashback where we see the boy continuing to write the letter to the girl, again we will use an over the shoulder shot as from this the audience will feel that they are reading something private that they shouldn’t be looking at. We will then adopt a close up shot to reveal what he is writing where we’ll see him writing “Just to get away from you” which will further enforce to the audience that they boy is wanting to get away from his girlfriend and end the relationship with her.
(Unknown 2 +3)
As the chorus plays for the third time we are at the stage where the relationship has deteriorated as this time “I’ve seen you looking at my face, I’ve seen you falling in disgrace” takes a more metaphorical meaning as when the girl falls down from being intoxicated it also symbolises the fall down of their relationship; again we will use a medium long shot to ensure that the audience are fully aware of the events that are proceeding. In this flashback we see the boy looking “disgraced” as it says in the song. As the chorus is repeated again the flashback ends and we see the boy still walking down the path we will then show a close up of the letter that we have shown him writing in flashbacks which will hopefully enable the audience to establish that he is on his way to giving his girlfriend the letter we will use a long shot to show him walking down the path which he will gradually walk closer to representing that he is now in control of what is going to happen. For when the chorus is repeatedly immediately again we will place in a jump cut to represent both the literal and metaphoric journey that has been on in terms of the journey of delivering the letter and the events that have lead to delivering the letter. At this point we will employ an over the shoulder shot of the boy posting the letter through the girls door so that the audience will feel that they are involved in what is occurring as they will feel as though they are intruding. Having seen the boy placing the letter through her letter box we will then show it falling through the door on the other side using a medium close up shot. We will use another over the shoulder shot to show the girl picking up the letter, opening it and beginning to read it, the shot will then turn into a close up of her face looking confused and distressed. We will then use a panning shot of her sliding down the door which will then go back into a close up of her face as she places her head in hands. The final shot will be a panning shot of the boy casually walking off her street smiling to himself.

1. Half the people who took the questionnaire were male, and half were female. This gives us balanced results and gender not affecting the overall results in any way.

2. When we asked college students their age the vast majority answered 17-20 therefore proving that this was the most popular age, and 13-16 and 21+ both had two each.

3. When asked whether you prefer performance based or narrative music videos performance resulted in being the most popular choice with 21 people choosing this over narrative based that only 9 people voted for.

4.When asking what where the college students most preferred genre of music the answer resulted as the following; 2 people voted of pop, 11 people voted for rnb, 5 people voted for rock, 7 for indie and rap didn’t receive any votes. Therefore with pop proving to be the most popular genre amongst the college students we will bare this in mind when deciding what genre of music to accompany our music video.

5. When we asked if people watched music videos the results came back as being that the majority of people did answering yes and only 4 answering no. Therefore we know that there is a good chance that our music video would be watched.

6. When we asked what music channels people watched MTV resulted in being the most popular choice amongst the students with 12 out of the 30 people that we asked choosing this over the likes of kerrang, scuzz, Q and kiss although when given the option to state any other music channels that where not listed TMF and The hits were both listed.

7. When we asked people whether they watch music videos online the majority said that they did with 21 out of 30 the students choosing yes, 7 people answered no and 3 said maybe. Meaning that if we where to put our music video online it would be watched the majority of people.

8.When asking people if they were willing to purchase a special edition for bonus features even at a slightly higher price 25 people answered maybe and 4 said yes meaning that if we were to put a digipak on the market, there would be a good chance of selling it.

9.When asked if amplification, illustration or contradiction in a video was their favourite, most people chose contradiction, but the results were close and there wasn’t much in it.

10.When we asked about whether they like dance routines in videos or not, 12 people filled the majority when they decided they sometimes like to see dance routines, but this was closely followed by yes with 11 people. The least popular option was that they don’t like dance routines.

11.Most people we asked about magazines said they read Kerrang, 3 votes ahead of the second highest choice which was NME. Classic Rock was the least popular choice, so this gives us a good idea where to place advertisements for the product.

12.We asked people about whether they like artwork that’s relevant to the album/song lyrics or concept through amplification, illustration or contradiction. The vast majority decided they do like it sometimes, 12 votes ahead of the second choice which was no. This lets us know that we do have the option of making the art relevant, instead of being limited to random images that do not relate to the music.

13.When asked about their favourite colour, most people said they liked blue best, and purple second. Seeing these results gives us an idea which colours to use more and less frequently on the packaging and in the video.

14.When we asked them about their favourite font style, most people nominated one called Hobo STD. This suggests that the audience prefers a more fun style, instead of a plain, older font. This will be considered when we’re designing the front cover for the digipak.

15.We asked an important question about where people get their music from. Most people seem to get theirs from a mixture of buying from shops and downloading from the internet. However, a lot of people did only buy it from shops. From this, we have important information suggesting we should push and promote the CD more, and to focus less on digital downloads.

16.To develop the answers from the previous question, we asked where exactly they did buy their music from. We learnt that the majority went to the online shop amazon.co.uk for it, but HMV remained a popular vote. From this, we can see that online and highstreet sales should be quite close and no large difference should be expected.

17.Most people decided they do like to see the artist or band on the cover art of a CD. This, again, helps us design the art and make the decision of whether to put a photo of the band on it.

18The gender of the main character of the video didn’t seem too important to the audience. All choices were close, with “boy” and “either” both with 11 votes, leaving the least popular being a girl. However, this does give us a choice and leaves our narrative more flexibility when it comes to producing the video.

19.The majority decided that we should include a wide variety of camera angles, with only 2 people who thought otherwise. From this, we learn that multiple angles should be used, and this will be included when filming the video.

20. When asked about whether they prefer black and white or colour videos, the results were similar to the gender question. There was not a huge gap between choices, though we do see a larger margin in these. Either was the most popular choice, closely followed by colour. Again, this gives us flexibility when making these decisions about how the video will be made.

21.We asked them about whether they prefer a linear or non-linear narrative. From this, we can see that most would enjoy a non-linear narrative over a linear which suggests an element of mystery or confusion might be welcomed by the audience. We can take these answers and use them to help decide on the style of the narrative.

22.The majority, when asked about special effects, say they do like to see them in videos sometimes, but not always. This was 3 votes ahead of the second most popular, which was yes and no being the least popular. This tells us that we do have the option of including some specials effects if the video needed them, or if we feel it would be better.

23.The vast majority of people asked do visit music-related websites occasionally, if not frequently. This tells us that advertising on music-specific websites would be a good idea, since a lot of people visit sites like that, meaning lots of people would see the advert at once.

24. Similar to the gender question again, seeing that a huge portion of answers came back saying they don’t mind whether the ending’s open or clear gives us the flexibility to use the one we feel works best without worrying about the reaction from the audience.
