LIGHT HOUSE FAMILY- I WISH MUSIC VIDEO ANALYSIS

Mise en scene

The artist is wearing a black leather jacket, black hat, black pants and shirt meaning making him differentiate from the rest of the people on the train. In contrast the women that features as being the leading lady in the video is dressed all in white creating an angelic image and persona as she takes thr role of guiding the artist through the train showing that everyone has problems. The remaining passengers on the tarin are all dressed in nueteral, mundane clothing ensuring that they all blend in together to represent that they are all in the same position as they all have problems but can all get through it.

Use of camera

The scene begins with an establishing shot which shows the audience the train running through the underground. Tracking shots have been frequently employed which show the artist walking through the train which furthermore allows the audience to establish and see the other peoples flashbacks to incidents that have occured in thier lives, with this a lot of over the shoulder shots have been used which shows things from the artists perspective. Close up shots are also evident throughout which show the emotion and expression of the people on the trains adding to the sad atmosphere that is being created.

Editing

Slow paced editing is employed in order to go with the pace of the music enhancing the emotion that is being created, to further heighten the level of emotion conveyed dissolves that turn into flashbacks are used to look into peoples lives to reinforce how troubled they feel. Eye line matches are used so that the audience can build a connection with the characters which creates further sympathy for them.

Narritive

We can clearly identify that the narritive is non linear due to the flashbacks that have been utilized in order to look into the lives of the people on the train. There is a clear beginning, middle and end. At the beginning the people all get onto the train, in the middle we see the artist singing and looking into peoples lives and then at the end everybody get of the train and walks upstaires towards the light.

How does the video create an image for the artist/star

The video creates a relaxed, easy living attitude for the band, they appear to be like ordinary everyday people dueto the artist blending in with the people on the train. The artist also appears as a positive role model.

Genre

We are able to identify the genre of the music due to the beat of the music, it is pop/ contemporary soul. It also comes across as being easy listening/ chill out music.

Aspects of performance and mode of adress

There was no real aspect of performance as no dance routines where evident in the video therefor it is all narritive based which relates to the performance which is within the song. A direct mode of adress was employed into the video as the audience are shown into peoples lives.

How do the visuals relate to the song

The visuals in the video amplify the song as the lyrics in the video are about people wanting to be free of all of thier problems and worries and in the video we see people on the trian looking troubled however at the end everybody walks towards the light showing that they can be free from all thier worries.

Audience

A the music is from the 901`s the band wouldnt realy have that many if any younger audience listeners therefor the age of the audience would be between the ages of 25 to late 40`s and would be accessible to either sex.

Representation

The artist appears to be of a higher class in regards to the other people on the train due to the fact that he is dressed in a suit whereas everyone else appear lower/working class however he is still able to blend in with the people on thr train as he part way through he removes his hat. Everyone on the train is dressed mundanely excluding the leading women who guides the artist down the train as she is dressed all in white, she is a stereotypically preety girl due to her long blonde hair and porcelin sking which also conveys her as being angelic like.
There is also a religiouse theme that runs through the video as the dark underground symbols hell as it shows all the trauma and bad experiences that they have had and then at the end there is a bright light at the top of the staires that everybody walks towards showing that they are all now free from thier problems and all feel as though they are in happy place so a heaven like atmosphere is created.

Aspects of performance/modes of address

The video employed a direct mode of adress we can establish this as the singer was singing directly to the camera as though to be singing to the audience or
MUSIC VIDEO NOTES

Music videos are a major marketing device employed by record companies which assist in popularising the song amongst the audience which will lead to further record sales cohering to the record companies main aim of trying to sell as many record as possible. Ever since the 1980`s music videos have been mainstream in the music industry although have been in existance since the 60`s as in 1964 the film A hard days night contained songs by The Beatles also featuring some attempt at narritive resulting in the film being more of a musical sequence rather than a film and so from this it is thought that it is The Beatles who were one of the main influences for the music video. Ever since The Beatles continued to employ inserts from films as a music tool, other bands soon followed suit and The Beatles lead the way with videos such as 'Strawberry fields forever' and 'Penny lane' both songs directed by Peter Goldman and were both described as being avendgard, they both adopted slow motion and sophisticated camera work through vast experimintation meaning that they were alot more professional looking than any other previouse musical sequence.
In 1891 the music video became mainstream and much more popular with the launch of MTV with the first song 'video killed the radio star'. From then on music videos became much more standard and also became a must for all artists and bands in order to compete in the vigerouse game of trying to sell the most records and as they could be cheaply produced by high tech equipment meaning that it was accessable for all acts to make a music video.

Cencorship
It is crucial that all products are censored in order to prevent any innopropriate behaviour from featuring in any of the music videos and so are regulated by British Broadcast Film Censor to ensure that no offensive behaviour is distributed to audiences, in the past the BBFC have been forced to censor videos such as 'Black or White' by Micheal Jackson after he innopropriately touched himself, as was 'smack my bitch up' by The Prodigy and also 'rock DJ' by Robbie Williams. Cencorship should be considerd when making a music video.

Music Theory
Some would argue that using a video to aid a song has made pop artificially based on image, this poses the question ' Are pop songs enough on thier own to provide meaning and pleasure to the audience. " A good music video is a clip that responds to the pleasure of music in which that the music is made visual either in new ways or in a way that accentuates existing visual associations" Andrew Goodwin 1992.

1. Music videos demonstrate genre characteristics such as dance routines in boy/girl bands.
2. The relationship between lyrics and visuals either contridicts ot illustrates the lyrics.
3. The relationship between music and lyrics will either illustrate, contridict or amplify what is on screen.
4. The demands of the record labell include lots of close ups of the artist(s) may develope motifiers that reoccur across the style of video
